Administration jobs such as assistant, IT and information systems roles, like HR roles, are easy to transition into from another sector with adequate experience and skill level. As always, displaying an interest in the work and ethos of the organisation is important, but it is not usually necessary to have experience in the NFP sector to land a great administration job in a NFP organisation.

Skills may include:

  • For administrative roles: good organisation and time management, IT and software skills, financial/business acumen, organisation and time management, good communication skills, ideally skilled in using administration software



  • For IT and web content roles: IT and software skills, writing abilities, in-depth knowledge of Content Management Systems, programming knowledge

Duties may include:

  • For administrative roles: general office administration, event coordination, documentation assistance, monitoring budgets and accounts, staff recruitment and training, staff communication, managing schedules and diaries, organising travel, general support to team members and executives



  • For IT and web content roles: programming, integrating online content, managing online systems, analysing web traffic, improving content strategies

Relevant experience may include:

  • For administrative roles: typically a Bachelor’s in finance, business, human resources or related; and/or significant experience (usually 2-5 years of administrative or management experience, longer if a candidate does not have a degree) and often financial management experience



  • For IT and web content roles: often a master’s in communications, digital marketing or IT, or at least a bachelor’s, plus experience a specific area usually in addition to website or online systems building/maintenance
