How we work?
What you can expect as a candidate
At NGO Recruitment, we value equitable recruitment practices and are committed to representing candidates reflective of the diverse organisations and communities we work with. We welcome and encourage applications from all backgrounds, ages, and identities, and are happy to adjust our recruitment process to support accessibility needs.
We are committed to a recruitment process that is inclusive, equitable and respectful, and we welcome discussions around any adjustments or accommodations our candidates may require at any stage of the process.
As we are primarily a search agency, we identify prospective candidates via networking, databases and referrals and therefore make direct approaches with prospective candidates. We don’t rely on job board applications only.
The following outlines each stage of the process, from application to outcome.
1. Application submitted
When you submit your application, your details are securely registered in our candidate database in accordance with our privacy policy. This allows our consultants to consider you for the role you have applied for, as well as future opportunities.
Each job advertisement contains a link to apply online. As we operate on a rolling recruitment model, applications are reviewed as they arrive and no closing date is applied unless stated otherwise. We therefore encourage you to submit your application as early as possible.
A complete application includes:
- A current CV
- A targeted 1–2 page cover letter addressing the skills and experience outlined in the advertisement
You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt, and further communication will follow as your application progresses.
2. Assessing suitability
Our consultants work closely with clients to understand their organisational needs and the competencies required for successful placement. Advertisements, position descriptions and candidate information packs are carefully prepared and approved by clients to ensure accuracy.
To assess your suitability, we recommend reviewing:
- The role or skills required section of a job advertisement
- The full position description where applicable
If you meet all or some of the requirements, or are unsure, please submit an application as our clients value diversity and recognise lived experience, and transferable skills are valued.
Shortlisted candidates may be asked to provide additional information or address specific selection criteria later in the process.
3. Location, work rights and working arrangements
Job advertisements usually outline the location, on-site or hybrid expectations, work rights requirements, and whether the role is full-time or part-time. Candidates should review this information carefully, ensure they meet any mandatory conditions, and consider the logistical arrangements needed.
These requirements reflect our clients’ operational needs and are generally non-negotiable. If unsure, please contact us.
4. Interviews and candidate support
Applicants identified by NGO Recruitment will be invited to an initial interview with one of our consultants to discuss their experience, suitability and career objectives. We will advise you if your resume will be submitted to the client for consideration.
If the client chooses to proceed with an interview, you will receive:
- A comprehensive briefing
- Interview preparation and guidance
- Support with scheduling and logistics
After your interview with the client, we will relay their feedback and outline next steps in the recruitment process.
Please note that this is our standard process; however, it may vary if a client requests an alternative approach or additional steps in the recruitment process.
Additional steps can include case studies, presentations, group activities, role-specific tests, psychometric assessments, portfolio reviews, or project tasks. If any of these are required, we will provide full details and guidance in advance.
Please note that we may use AI-assisted tools to support our recruitment process and interviews may be recorded to assist with accurate documentation of discussions. If you have any questions or concerns, please let our consultant know.
5. Remuneration guidance
Where available, a salary range will be included in the job advertisement or candidate information pack. Packages typically include base salary, superannuation and can have further organisational benefits. Our consultants will discuss with you your remuneration expectations early in the process, to ensure alignment with the package on offer. Any barriers to you accepting the role if you are a shortlisted candidate will also be discussed.
NGO Recruitment then negotiates the final package with the preferred candidate on behalf of the client.
6. Job Offer and Placement
If you are the preferred candidate, we will guide you through the final stages of the process, including reference checks, your resignation, finalising the package, confirming the start date, and signing the contract.
Most clients prefer successful candidates to commence as soon as feasible, taking into account notice periods, unless stated otherwise.
7. Unsuccessful Applications
If you are not shortlisted or if the role has been filled, you will be notified. Due to high application volumes, individual feedback may not always be possible.
We encourage you to:
- Monitor current vacancies on our job board
- Apply for future roles that match your skills and experience
- Purchase our NGO Careers eBook for sector insights and career guidance
8. Ongoing Engagement
Your CV remains securely stored in our database in line with our privacy policy, and you may receive periodic updates about opportunities aligned with your profile. Your CV will never be shared with a potential employer without your permission. If you prefer not to receive further communication, please let us know and we will update your preferences and/or delete your information from our database.
